ROCKLAND, MA AND ALEXANDRIA, VA, ISSUED AUGUST 31, 2022… The South Shore Chamber of Commerce has been named one of three Communications Excellence Best In Show winners by ACCE, the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives. ACCE is the leading national association for chambers of commerce and economic development organizations representing over 1,600 members, and more than 9,000 industry professionals. The South Shore Chamber of Commerce initially won the 2022 Award for Communication Excellence for “Overall Best Campaign” for their Hello! South Shore campaign. Hello! South Shore is a regional destination marketing campaign that was created and designed to assist the regional recovery from the economic impact of COVID-19. After receiving a Regional Pilot Project Grant through the Massachusetts Office of Business Development, the Chamber partnered with local towns, businesses, and organizations to create a series of excursions that ran throughout the summer. The excursions were designed to spotlight arts, culture, history, outdoors, food, shops, recreation, holiday events, farmers’ markets, and neighborhoods across the South Shore. The campaign was the first to formally promote the South Shore region. It’s companion website www.hellosouthshore.com encouraged 600,000+ residents to think of “local” as more than their own neighborhood or town and promoted broader exploration. This was accomplished through an exciting and robust marketing campaign—launched in less than six weeks— spotlighting discovery and the many excursions across the 25 cities and towns the chamber represents. The Chamber enlisted local business members for campaign creation including logo and creative development as well as media placement. The campaign launch spanned three months during the summer of 2021 with 125 unique communications produced and delivered through email, radio, social media, billboard, magazine, and other forms of media. The website, www.hellowsouthshore.com, is still very much the hub for all the excursions and places to visit in the region. As a result of this groundbreaking campaign for the South Shore Chamber, Hello! South Shore reached nearly a million impressions in just 13 weeks. The project also provided countless local businesses, organizations, and events the much-needed support they deserve as they recover from operational losses due to the pandemic. The Best In Show Award was announced live at the ACCE Annual Convention held July 27 in Indianapolis. The Hello! South Shore campaign competed against major metro chambers and regional chambers in 3 other award categories including Digital Media, Website, Print & Electronic Publications. “Effective communications and storytelling are crucial to supporting a chamber’s mission and showcasing its impact,” said ACCE President & CEO Sheree Anne Kelly. “The South Shore Chamber of Commerce’s innovative efforts to help drive engagement and make a difference in the region it serves are inspiring and very deserving of this recognition.” “Looking ahead and beyond recovery, the Hello! South Shore project is directly linked to our larger economic and community development goals as part of the South Shore 2030 Plan,” explained Peter Forman, president & CEO of the 121-year-old chamber. “If you’re thinking about a campaign to brand your region, think local. Marketing the assets of your community to outsiders falls flat if the local businesses and residents don’t recognize and value those assets first.” A panel of communications and marketing professionals from ten U.S.-based chambers of commerce evaluated entries submitted for this year’s competition. Entries were organized by category — based on the chamber’s annual revenue. Judges presented 13 Awards of Excellence and three Best in Show awards. If you missed it, you’re in for a treat. We have a recap below AND a “must see” list of places to visit on the South Shore this summer, crafted by your fellow Chamber members! See below for list.
The Highlights
We are suggesting a break in tradition for 2021 regarding the Chair, First Vice-Chair and Immediate Past Chair. These are normally only one-year terms. We are asking Renee McInnes, Deirdre Savage and Jim Dunphy to continue their current positions next year. The Chamber’s year is not very different than what many of our members have gone through. We have not stopped. We have made progress on several fronts and found new ways to serve members. It has been a year of quick adjustments with some projects and programs being put on hold until more normal operations can resume. To move through the remainder of the COVID era while keeping focused on our strategic plan the Executive Committee, Board and management feels it is better to keep those three positions in place for next year. We appreciate all three agreeing to that plan.

Peter caught up with Congressman Lynch this week and they are working on a convenient time for him to address the Chamber.
Peter was in DC over the weekend through Tuesday for some meetings with the U.S. Chamber. He had a chance to visit the National Museum of African American History. Timing was nice as he just finished The Warmth of Other Suns about the Great Migration of African Americans from the South to the North from the World War 1 era up to the 1970’s. He recommends both. If you go to the museum though give yourself several hours – there is a lot to see and read.
Courtney attended a lunch in Boston’s Seaport with new Massport CEO, Lisa Wieland. She talked about the importance of connecting with the business community and provided some updates on existing projects and the authority’s strategic initiatives moving forward. Did you know that if you take the water taxi (think Hull or Hingham) to the aiport, you can get a “ticket to skip” to the front of the security line at Logan? Check it out!
Hull is moving forward with a development strategy around the DCR Park and Carousel. Peter attended a meeting of the Board of Selectman and various local committees to hear a presentation on the plan. It is a solid plan that makes sense. He’ll be posting some more information on the website next week.
Leadership South Shore Class of 2020 attended Economic Development Day on Tuesday, January 28. First stop was hosted by Conway Country in Norwell. Rich Beal, CEO of A.W. Perry gave a presentation update on commercial and housing. New owners of the Plymouth & Brockton Bus line, Win Sargent and John Cogliano, provided an update on their plans to innovate and growth the P&B Bus routes. Current cohort members gave updates from their perspective development roles including Lisa Berardinelli from Hanover Crossing/PREP, Curtis Webb from Bristol Bros. Development, Patrick Brady from Cornerstone Realty Capital, Bill Kingdon from Ellis Realty, and Tom Osuch from South Shore Bank. Second stop took the 25-person cohort to Rock Solid Tops fabrication and design showroom in Pembroke. Final stop of the day was a bus tour led by Rich Beal of Union Point in South Weymouth.
Peter had a chance to sit down with some relatively new leaders on the South Shore. Dr. Lily Hsu, the new President of Labouré College in Milton who also had a chance to meet our Board. Dr. Joe Froliks is leading New England Quality Care Alliance in Braintree. While at the NPO Group meeting I had a chance to meet Michael Rodrigues the new President of New England Village and look forward to sitting down with him in a few weeks.
He also joined our Economic Development Chair, Rich Beal of A.W. Perry at a forum with the Secretary of Transportation to hear some of the progress and challenges around transportation. Our own Transportation Advisory Group will be launched soon.
Peter will be in Washington next week for some meetings but back in time for our Economic Forecast 7:44 breakfast on Thursday.
Eight new members attended the member orientation, Navigating the Chamber, on Thursday. Next Navigating the Chamber is March 11.
Three winners of the EAT South Shore gift cards are Whitney Knight, Brian Murray, and Martine Taylor! Thank you to all for completing our 2020 Membership Programming Survey!
Speaking of EAT South Shore, the advisory team met to talk about events for this year. We have some fun, different things in the works (as well as the last Hogtoberfest – October 1st!) Our first event will be the Cohasset Frozen Stroll. We will stop by Red Lion Inn, Lenny’s Hideaway, and Bia Bistro! Limited spots available.
