Did you miss one? You can hear their stories and get to know these women leaders through our YouTube channel (don't forget to subscribe!).
What are the challenges for women in leadership today?
"We need to be careful that we are not inadvertently creating more roadblocks for more women. I think that is a unique challenge as we get into positions of power. We need to be careful not just to take on the persona of the status quo... women were expected to look like men and to act like men. You were successful if you did that and you rose through the ranks. But how crazy is that? If I look like the guy in power, dress like the guy in power and I do all the things like the guy in power, I must get power. I think it's easy to forget that that's a really bad thing. You need to show up as yourself. And if you can't, it's not the right company for you."

A little perspective and insight from our featured WiLL speakers...

We've had fun getting to know these women this year. We hope you enjoy these thoughts from each of their sessions and feel inspired.

Deirdre Savage, Blue Cross Blue Shield of MA

"You don't need to be a Leader to be a leader... Don't be constrained by your title to define whether you can demonstrate that you have leadership qualities that will be leveraged. And make sure you are getting paid to be leveraged.”

Michelle Markowitz, Cardinal Cushing Centers

"I think that stepping into these various roles as my career grew. I think that going from a peer to a supervisor definitely has its challenges but I think what's important as a leader is to always be your authentic self. If you are truly your authentic self and you lead with empathy, humility and respect you'll always be successful."

“I’m a firm believer in partnerships. I don’t think anyone can do it on your own. I think the partnerships are the way in which we make our communities stronger and thereby make our own companies or institutions stronger as well. It’s one of the reasons I got interested in the Chamber – who else is involved and making contributions and being mutually supportive.”

Women in Local Leadership: Sponsor Spotlight on Mass General Brigham

Women in Leadership at MGB
By Mary Ann Blackmur, Community Outreach Program Manager for Mass General Brigham

The landscape of leadership in the workplace is shifting to include more women in leadership roles that were traditionally held by men. This includes all industries and  Mass General Brigham is proud to have at the helm Ann Klibanski, MD , President and Chief Executive Officer since June 2019, Cindy Peterson, MBA,  Vice President Regional Ambulatory Operations and Business Development and Kris McCue, Regional Director of Operations for our South Shore locations.

Women leaders tend to have a more “holistic approach to leadership and to the organization. This includes balancing financial and performance results with goals of increasing diversity on leadership teams, an inclusive culture, and driving positive change.”  [1] These holistic leadership traits have been instrumental during the Covid-19 pandemic in allowing businesses to pivot and adjust as needed to stabilize the effects the pandemic has had on their industry and workforce.
All leaders are facing  extraordinary workforce challenges as the result of the pandemic. Many employees are juggling childcare , elder care and homeschooling in addition to their job responsibilities. Successful leaders have not only  recognized these conflicts but listened to their employees to come up with solutions that meet the business and their employees’ needs.  Remote work, flexible schedules are just a few strategies that have succeeded to date.

“ Keeping the needs of our patients front and center , wherever we can we strive to be a flexible employer , we care for our patients by caring for our team” Cindy Peterson, MBA, VP Regional Ambulatory Operations and Business Development.

As we navigate the “new normal” the holistic approach of women  leaders will be instrumental in ensuring that the business needs are being met while considering the personal needs of their employees to create a harmonious working environment.

Leadership Tips from 3MentorAdvisory

3MentorAdvisory  is a collaborative effort of three seasoned women business owners: Jacqueline Collins, Principal, Partnering for Performance, Michelle Hatch, Partner, Pozerski Hatch & Company, P.C., and Amy Zintl, Managing Partner, ServiceSense. Jacquie brings strategy, communication and leadership skills, Michelle brings accounting and financial advisory, and Amy brings strategies to help keep and retain customers.

Our purpose is to offer a 360 view of business in order to create a fresh approach to improvement and to help businesses “retool”.  Right now, our attention is focused on women in business or women in decision making positions at larger companies.
Here are some tips we give our clients:
  • Retooling: re-committing to what matters most. First and foremost, identify opportunities for sustainability by looking at achievements and ensuring capacity and capability to maintain.
  • Clarify and leverage your leadership styles and strengths.
  • Shift your engagement with customers to meet new priorities and needs.
  • Review your communication plan and if you don’t have one, build it now.
  • Re-evaluate your financial foundation and monitor cash flow.
  • Re-align your 3-year strategies to a 1-year plan.
  • Ask yourself some tough questions:
    • Do your primary goals still make sense?
    • Can your strategy plan be easily described?
    • What is your true purpose?
    • Are some windows of opportunity about to close.
    • Do you know your market?  What has shifted for them?
    • Have any solutions created new problems that are as bad or worse than the original problems?
    • Which 3 things do you hope remain the same over the next 12 months?
    • Which 3 things do you hope change over the next 12 months?

The bottom line is to get back to the basics of why you started your business, and ensuring purpose and mission are congruent.
