The Chamber’s meeting space was taken over by the NPO Group to hold its Bagels & Best Practices in an extended version. Members of the steering committee facilitated three concurrent roundtable discussions around the major topic of Fundraising. The discussion topics included: Keeping Events Fresh; Engaging Young Professionals; and Communicating Effectively with Your Donors. Pages and pages of best practices and ideas were generated and will be distributed to all nonprofit members of the Chamber in the coming weeks.

Thursday evening, June 13, the South Shore Manufacturing Advisory Group held its first networking social and industry outlook at Mayflower Brewing, Plymouth. Over 80 attendees representing local manufacturers, educational institutions, and industry associations including MassHire South Shore, and the South Shore Chamber, turned out to learn more about the Advisory Group’s accomplishments and future plans. Established back in the Spring of 2018 under the organization umbrella of the MassHire South Shore Workforce Board the Advisory Group, this group meets monthly to create and administer programs and initiatives to support the manufacturing industry in the region.
The consistent challenge expressed by area manufacturers throughout the region is a need to fill their expanding workforce demands to keep up with the needs of their customers, and grow their business operations. Finding quality workers with the basic training needed to enter the company’s workforce is a challenge that the South Shore Manufacturing Advisory Group is trying to address. Working with area colleges and high schools, the Advisory Group members are developing an after- hours curriculum for high school students, young adults and mature job seekers to prepare them with the basic skill-sets necessary to embark on a career in manufacturing, as well as curriculum options that will provide individuals college credits that can be utilized towards a degree program. As part of NVNA & Hospice's charititable mission, the Pat Roche Hospice Home is a beautiful 12-bed Hospice Home in Hingham provides a dignified and peaceful environment for residents facing a life-limiting illness. They have served more than 500 families over the past four years and are the only, non-profit, independent Hospice Home of its kind on the South Shore.
Thank you to our Ambassadors who worked all day to help maintain the beauty of the grounds for the hospice home's upcoming fundraising event, The Twelve, on June 19th. Participating Ambassadors: Adam Goodrich (Chair), Marathon Physical Therapy; Nicole Hales (Past Chair), PR First; Meaghan Groves, NVNA & Hospice; Bill Kingdon, Ellis Realty Advisors; Kim MacDonald, Nankin Dental; and Gabi Guimaraes, Brabo Payroll. Leadership on the Lawn brought together the alumni from the first two years with the current year to network and catch up with each other.
Leadership South Shore began in 2016 and is modeled after leadership initiatives in other states and was launched here on the South Shore in 2016 by South Shore Bank in conjunction with the South Shore Chamber of Commerce. To learn more about Leadership South Shore, visit https://www.southshorechamber.org/leadership-south-shore.htm Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito joined the Chamber and South Shore Economic Development Corp. (SSEDC) leaders, Braintree Mayor Joe Sullivan, Weymouth Mayor Bob Hedlund, and area developers in a discussion held June 4 that focused on economic development and housing initiatives both generally around the Commonwealth and more specifically throughout the South Shore and the Braintree/Weymouth Landing.
Throughout the discussion, which started at Landing 53 (25 Commercial Street, Braintree), Lt. Gov. Polito discussed how the initiative, South Shore 2030, launched by the South Shore Chamber is very similar to what she and Governor Baker are looking to achieve across the Commonwealth, and how the leadership of the mayors and the business community took this vision and made it a reality at the Landing. A plan is important, she said, but without resources and partnerships, it cannot be implemented. We are so appreciative of everyone who made LiA 2019 - our 8th LiA event - a huge success. We had over 150 students attend and heard from 9 speakers who shared valuable experience, perspective, and advice. We are incredibly grateful to the support of our sponsors as this is a genuine work of love and everyone involved is passionate about empowering the next generation of young women! Thank you Eastern Bank, Rockland Trust Company, George Washington Toma & Appliance, Inc., The Woodward School, and Marinelli Law Offices. The day would also not be possible without Curry College providing space and food, especially Anne Beaumont, Director of Conference Services, who helps guide us through this process. Thank you to our Moderator, Jill Beresford of Massachusetts Business Development Center, and to all of our panelists:
And to all of our workshop speakers:
And a HUGE thank you to our fantastic Keynote Speaker Tamara Gardner - Author, Speaker, Entrepreneur, and Owner of Boldly-Branded and TGX Talks. Massachusetts Nonprofit Network (MNN) held its annual Excellence in Nonprofit Awards at the State House. Finalists in each award category represented came from all over the Commonwealth. We particularly want to congratulate Christine Buckley, Executive Director of the Brain Aneurysm Foundation, for being a Finalist in the Excellence in Leadership award category.
South Shore nonprofits and board members should mark their calendars to submit their nomination for next year’s awards. Let’s show how strong our nonprofit sector is on the South Shore!
