Leadership in Action

The Mission of Leadership in Action (LiA)
We support leadership development by focusing on our future generation of leaders. Leadership in Action introduces high school students to career and leadership opportunities through shared experiences of Chamber members, women in business & community leaders.

The Audience
This program primarily targets female sophomore and junior students who attend high schools within the South Shore. It is specifically designed for students who will benefit the most from this program.

The Program
The program creates enhanced awareness and a sense of empowerment for students. It also creates more opportunities for Chamber members to be involved and find their own levels of leadership by sharing their experiences, best practices and lessons learned with student audience members. The event is held at a Curry College located in Milton so that students can experience a college campus.

The Speakers
Throughout the day the attendees are able to hear from and interact with a variety of speakers and presenters. The day kicks off with a keynote motivational speaker and an interactive panel discussion inclusive of senior women business and community leaders. Breakout session speakers are selected for a variety of topics from social media, lifestyle and career choices.

Milestones
  • LiA was created in 2011 by the Chamber's Women's Business Connection.  A small group of hand-selected girls from Randolph High participated in a panel discussion where local business leaders shared their stories to how they found ‘success’.   The girls were grateful to have a forum uniquely designed to instill the power of opportunity into each of them.
  • In 2012, Curry College graciously agreed to host LiA on their campus.  We re-tooled our program and expanded to a full-day event that included a keynote speaker and introduced workshop topics around multiple themes. The event drew approximately 100 students from following South Shore high schools:  Braintree, Quincy North, Quincy, Weymouth and Randolph.
  • In 2013, LiA grew to 9 participating South Shore-based schools representing over 130 attendees.
  • In 2014, we raised over $12,000 in sponsorships.  Olympic Gold-medal gymnast Aly Raisman was the keynote speaker.  Our overall satisfaction score for the event reached an all-time high.  We had a waiting list of school participants.
  • In 2015, we modified our agenda to provide focus on what consistently worked well.  We reduced our workshops to three:  A Healthy You, A Successful You, and A Social You.  We incorporated mechanisms to enhance student engagement and selected a keynote speaker who touched the hearts of many girls.
  • Through 2016 we incorporated facilitated networking into the lunch program as a way to continue expanding the participants’ experiences and interactions between various groups.
